A new genus of highly specialized ants in Cretaceous Burmese amber (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
A new genus of ants, Zigrasimecia Barden and Grimaldi, is described for a new and uniquely specialized species, Z. tonsora Barden and Grimaldi n.sp., preserved in Cretaceous amber from Myanmar. The amber is radiometrically dated at 99 myo. Zigrasimecia is closely related to another basal genus of ants known only in Burmese and French Cretaceous amber, Sphecomyrmodes Engel and Grimaldi, based in...
متن کاملA new species of Asphinctopone (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae) from Tanzania
Asphinctopone is a rarely encountered genus of ponerine ants, previously known only from the wet forest zones of West and central Africa. In the most recent revision of the genus Bolton & Fisher synonymised the three previously described species under A. sylvestrii Santschi and described one new but very closely related species, A. differens Bolton & Fisher. A very distinctive new species, Asph...
متن کاملA new species of Stigmatomma from Taiwan (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Amblyoponinae)
Stigmatomma is the most speciose ant genus in the subfamily Amblyoponinae. In the present paper, the worker caste of a new species is described, S. luyiaesp. n., which was collected from a soil sample in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest in Taiwan. An identification key to the females of Stigmatomma species with 11 antennomeres occurring in Asia is also provided.
متن کاملA formicine in New Jersey cretaceous amber (Hymenoptera: formicidae) and early evolution of the ants.
A worker ant preserved with microscopic detail has been discovered in Turonian-aged New Jersey amber [ca. 92 mega-annum (Ma)]. The apex of the gaster has an acidopore and, thus, allows definitive assignment of the fossil to the large extant subfamily Formicinae, members of which use a defensive spray of formic acid. This specimen is the only Cretaceous record of the subfamily, and only two othe...
متن کاملNew species of Central American Rhopalothrix Mayr, 1870 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae).
The ant genus Rhopalothrix is a rare inhabitant of wet forest leaf litter and soil. We propose a monophyletic R. isthmica clade that is restricted to the Neotropics, contains most of the species in the genus, and has its center of abundance and diversity in Central America. Thirteen species are recognized in the R. isthmica clade, of which eight are described as new and three are redescribed. A...
